THE COMPLETE PROFILE OF MR. ASHOK BORKAR

(1) Maria Monica Susairaj misled Malad cops & friends

Kannada actress Maria Monica Susairaj, co-accused in the murder of Neeraj Grover, not only misled Malad cops but also her kin and friends, who came along with her to the Malad police station to lodge a missing complaint.
On May 7, Susairaj’s boyfriend Jerome Emile Mathew killed Grover in fit of rage after he found the latter lying naked at Susairaj’s flat in Malad. Later, Mathew and Susairaj chopped Grover’s body into several pieces, packed it into three handbags, took it to the jungles in Manor and burnt it. After disposing off Grover’s body, Mathew, a naval officer posted at Kochi, left the next day on May 8. Meanwhile, Susairaj called a few of her close friends and asked them to accompany her to the Malad police station to lodge the missing complaint. Sources said when she was reporting the missing complaint, Mathew was constantly guiding her on the cellphone.
On May 9, Susairaj phoned her brother, Richard and sister Veronica in Mysore, and told them that she was depressed as her best friend Grover had gone missing. “Richard and Veronica told her not to worry as they would be there soon,” said joint CP (crime) Rakesh Maria.
On May 11, Richard and Veronica arrived and stayed with Susairaj in her flat. They gave her moral support. She also told her brother that Grover was to give her a big break in an upcoming television serial.
Richard believed her and on May 12, he accompanied her to meet Rakesh Maria at his office in Crawford Market. But Maria who is experienced in dealing with criminals realised there was something fishy. He immediately told Susairaj that she was his first suspect as she was the last person with whom Grover was seen.
“What is surprising is the fact that she kept fooling her friends and kin until we cracked the case on May 17,” said Maria. Meanwhile, in a fresh development in the case, Mathew told senior inspector Ashok Borkar on Friday that he was so deeply and seriously in love with Susairaj that, on her instance, he recently broke off ties with his former girlfriend in Bangalore. He said that in October, last year, Susairaj had found out about his ex-girlfriend after which she confronted him. She told him that if he wanted to get married to her, he should leave his ex.

(2) ENCOUNTER on the highway
Express News Service

Mumbai, March 29: The hunt dragged on for a sleepless week. This afternoon, officers of the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) finally caught up with three men believed to be Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists on a busy highway at Goregaon and shot them dead.
According to police records, Lashkar-e-Toiba area commander Abu Sultan alias Abu Akram alias Faizal alias Irfan is suspected to have masterminded a series of bomb blasts in the city in the past four months. The identity of his two associates has been withheld, fearing it could hamper further investigations.

The suspects, who were in a Maruti car (800 MH 05 AH 2786), were caught unawares when the squad closed in on them.
They were apparently waiting for an associate near NSE company around 11.45 am.
An eyewitness, who refused to be named, said seeing the policemen in bulletproof jackets, one of the suspects (Abu Sultan) got off the vehicle and fired a burst of 11 rounds from his AK 47 assault rifle. His associates fired eight more rounds from their 9 mm caliber pistols.
The squad lead by ‘encounter’ specialist Senior Inspector Pradeep Sharma retaliated by firing 28 rounds, killing the three terrorists on the spot. Sharma and his trigger-happy deputy PSI Daya Nayak had bullets ricocheting off their bulletproof jackets.
At the scene of the ‘encounter’, an AK 47 rifle and two pistols lay about 10 metres apart in a thick pool of blood. An assorted lot of empty rounds was picked up the police a few minutes after the men fell dead.
The police have also recovered around Rs 4 lakh concealed in a VCD player stashed in the bullet-ridden car used by the terrorists. Investigators claim the money was to be paid to an operative.
The police say they have recovered incriminating documents, including some with names of prominent leaders.
Train timetables and a pair of binoculars are among the other items recovered from the spot.
The police said they have strong evidence to suggest that the the slain terrorists could be linked to the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
The police said Sultan had links with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activists in Mumbai, Kalyan and Padga near Bhivandi in Thane district.
Investigators suspect the LeT operatives could have been scheming in the metropolis for the past 18 months.
Traffic on the busy Western Express Highway came to a virtual standstill after the encounter. A squad of Special Reserve Police Force were called in to marshall the mob, who wanted to catch a glimpse of the slain terrorists.
Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Dr Satya Pal Singh, after visiting the spot, said: ‘‘My men have done a great job.’’
On the hunt, for the past one weekMarch 18:An informant tips off cops about movements of the three suspects.
Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Satya Pal Singh, Additional CP Rakesh Maria and DCP Pradip Sawant lay the blueprint of the manhunt.
March 21: The first crackdown at Kalyan proves futile when Inspector Pradeep Sharma, PSI Daya Nayak and commandos try to nab local corporator Saifuddin Karde on March 21.
Another team comprising inspectors Prakash Bhandari and Aslam Monim meet resistance near Bhiwandi, when they try to detain a man for questioning. Similar raids are conducted by Inspector Ashok Borkar and PSI Sanjeev Borkar.
March 27: DCP Pradip Sawant visits Padga. Even as the informant provides accurate information on their location, the three manage to evade arrests.
On Thursday night, a team of officers attached to the CIU were assisted by a strong posse of commandos. This was probably to avoid any untoward incident during the raids.
March 28: In the evening, the police had almost zeroed in on the militants when they again managed to give the squad a slip. ‘‘We knew they were very close. The team was fully prepared,’’ says PSI Daya Nayak.
March 29: This morning, the informant calls again. The militants are caught unawares.

(3) Chhota Rajan aide shot dead in Andheri

MUMBAI: A sharp-shooter of the Chhota Rajan gang was killed in an encounter by the crime branch near Shoppers' Stop at Andheri (west) in the wee hours of Friday. The 24-year-old gangster, Prakash Koli alias Chintya, was wanted in several cases including murder, attempt to murder and extortion. On Thursday night, inspector Pradeep Sharma of the Andheri crime branch unit got a tip off that Koli would be coming near Shoppers' Stop to meet his associates in order to plan a murder. A team comprising of assistant inspectors Ashok Borkar and Prakash Bhandari and sub-inspectors Daya Nayak and Sanjeev Gawde laid a trap at the spot. At around 12.20 am Koli came in a autorickshaw and was identified by the police team. When asked to surrender he whipped out a US-made 9 mm pistol of the Lama company and fired at the police team. The police fired back in self-defence and Koli was injured in the exchange of fire. He was rushed to Cooper hospital but pronounced dead before admission. The police also recovered three live cartridges from the deceased. "The pistol used by Koli is a very sophisticated firearm and highly effective," Mr Nayak said. Prior to joining the Rajan gang, Koli was a lieutenant of Bahrain-based gangster Ali Budesh. He joined the Budesh gang in 1995 and split in 1999. The killing of Koli is significant because there are very few shooters left in the underworld and Koli was a good one.

The city has already been shaken by the murder of Neeraj Grover and the manner in which his body was cut into 300-odd pieces sounded horrifying, but more gruesome details of the events that transpired in the apartment of Maria Sushairaj on May 6-7 emerged during her 'confession' to the police. She is believed to have told the police that her jealous boyfriend raped her, not once but twice, after asking her to get a knife and other materials to get rid of Grover's body.Maria rapedEarly on May 7, Sushairaj watched her boyfriend M L Jerome Matthew and her close friend Grover fight fiercely over her. The verbal duel soon turned violent with Grover lunging towards Matthew with a kitchen knife. At some point, Matthew got hold of the knife and stabbed Grover several times. Moments later while Grover lay lifeless in a pool of blood in the bathroom of Sushairaj's second floor flat in Dheeraj Solitair appartments at Malad, Matthew allegedly forced himself upon her, raping her twice at knife point.Later, Matthew used the same knife, bought by Sushairaj on his instuructions, to chop Grover's body into 300 pieces. By her own claims, at this point her role changed from a witness to a partner in crime as she helped her boyfriend escape the clutches of the law.According to Crime Branch officers, Grover, creative head of a production house, had become close to Sushairaj, a Kannada actress and a Bollywood aspirant, over the past couple of months. They met often and Grover dropped in at her appartment in Dheeraj Solitair on May 6 as soon as she mentioned needing help in setting up her new home.THE SUSPICIONLate at night on May 6, Matthew, a naval officer based in Kochi, called Sushairaj and got suspicious on hearing a man's voice in the background. Even as he enquired, Grover told Sushairaj, "Is your boyfriend getting too insecure about my presence here?"Police said this further enraged a very possessive Matthew who had already been suspecting Sushairaj of having an affair because of her growing indifferent behaviour towards him."After Sushairaj shifted to Mumbai six months ago, she had started avoiding Matthew and had also postponed their engagement. Of late, she had taken a liking to Grover and his presence in her house that night confirmed Matthew's suspicions," said an officer with the Crime Branch.THE SCUFFLE AND THE MURDERMatthew caught an early morning flight and reached Sushairaj's home around 7.30 am. On finding a semi-clad Grover in his girlfriend's house, Matthew threw a fit and both men barked at each other fighting over Sushairaj.Senior inspector Ashok Borkar of Crime Branch (unit IX), "An enraged Grover soon fetched a kitchen knife and lunged at Matthew menacingly. Being from the armed forces, Matthew easily tackled Grover. He ducked and punched Grover in the face pushing him into the bathroom. There he snatched the knife and stabbed Grover him several times killing him instantly."

(4) Salman’s phone was under surveillance’

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday said that Bollywood actor Salman Khan's phone was under 'surveillance' from August to October '01 after the police discovered that calls from the actor's phone were made to an underworld don.
“The police had stumbled upon a number from where calls were found to have been made to Abu Salem. That number belonged to Salman Khan and as such it was kept under surveillance from August '01,” RR Patil, the state home minister, said on the floor of the state assembly.
But he declined to elaborate on whether the actor was ever found talking to the underworld. “The government is seeking legal opinion to find out whether police can book someone for conversing with a friend. We want the case to be fool-proof,” Mr Patil said.
He also assured the House that no one would be spared if found guilty. “We will not shield anyone,” he assured. The home minister announced the appointment of two senior police officials, additional police commissioner KL Bishnoi and assistant police commissioner TK Yengde to probe the case.
Both Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai have said that the voices on the tapes were not theirs. Mr Patil made it clear that there was no reason for transferring the case from Mumbai police to the state CID.
On the issue of the recent expose by the media, where in Salman Khan purportedly boasts of his underworld connections while talking to his friend Aishwarya Rai, the home minister said that the voice samples of both, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai have been sent to a forensic laboratory in Chandigarh to compare them with the voices figuring in a controversial tape.
The audio tapes, the contents of which were aired by television channels and the transcripts published by a newspaper, has Salman flaunting his underworld connections and asking Aishwarya to perform in a show organised by gangster Abu Salem, warning her of dire consequences if she refuses.
The voice samples of Salman and Aishwarya were taken by the police after the Maharashtra government ordered a probe to ascertain the genuineness of the tapes.
The Salman-Aishwarya tapes issue had triggered noisy scenes in the assembly with the opposition trying to grill the government for not taking action against the actor. The government had promised to make a formal statement on the controversy on Wednesday.
Besides the actors, the police have also recorded statements of four top officers, namely inspectors Pradeep Sharma, P Bhandari, Ashok Borkar and sub-inspector Daya Nayak, in connection with the ongoing tape probe to know if they were aware of the existence of such a tape.
The police also recorded the statement of former Crime Branch DCP Pradip Sawant, who was one of the senior most officers in the Mumbai Crime Branch when the alleged conversation between the two stars is believed to have been recorded in '01.
